Mfantsipim Foundation UK & Ireland serves as the official representative of Mfantsipim Old Boys Association (MOBA) in the UK and Ireland. Established in North London in the autumn of 1986, it began as a network of alumni united to support the welfare of former students in the UK. They also aimed to enhance the education of current students at Mfantsipim School by providing essential equipment and educational resources that were in short supply.
In November 1987, MOBA UK was formally recognized as a legal entity under the leadership of Dr. E.V.C. de Graft Johnson, following discussions between the School’s Board of Governors and Mr. E.N. Quartey (MOBA class of 1949), the Secretary of MOBA UK. The official launch took place in 1989, presided over by the distinguished former headmaster, Dr. F.L. Bartels. Notably, Miss Caroline Picot, daughter of Reverend Picot, the school’s first headmaster, also attended this milestone event.
MOBA UK was granted charitable status in 1994, registering with the Charity Commission (Charity Number 1042983). In 2006, the organization was renamed Mfantsipim Foundation, maintaining the same charity number, to expand its mission of promoting education at Mfantsipim School and within Ghana’s Central Region.
Mfantsipim Foundation was officially launched in October 2008 during a high-profile event at the Chelsea Harbour Hotel. Distinguished guests included His Excellency Mr. Kofi Annan, former United Nations Secretary-General; Mr. Annan Cato, Ghanaian High Commissioner; Mrs. Baroness Chalker of Wallasey, former Minister of State for Overseas Development and Africa; and several former Mfantsipim teachers, including Mr. Allan Welch and Leslie Beckett, who had taught Mr. Annan. We remain accountable to the Charity Commission for England and Wales.
